Before the Heat

Why We Started Here

There is something Japan taught me about time that I keep coming back to.

Most places recognize four seasons. Japan recognizes 72. The traditional calendar, rooted in centuries of close observation of the natural world, divides the year into micro-seasons, each one lasting about five days. There is a season for when the first peach blossoms appear. A season for when the deer begin to shed their antlers. A season for the precise moment when the heat of summer starts to build before it fully arrives. The Japanese concept of omakase, of trusting the chef to read what the season is actually offering right now, comes from that same attentiveness. Not what season it officially is. What it feels like today.

We are not in the food industry. But that philosophy of staying present to change, of noticing the shifts that most people walk past, feels like exactly the right lens for what EMK does. Hair is not static. It responds to humidity, to water, to the time of year, to stress, to rest, to everything we are going through. It changes daily, adapting to its environment the way everything living does. The 72 micro-seasons are not simply about food or farming. They are a practice of paying attention to the world as it is, rather than as we have categorized it.

Our hair changes with us. It has always been one of the most honest records of our lives.

That is the spirit Before the Heat was made in. We are not quite in summer yet. The colors are still soft. The light has that particular quality of late spring, the kind that makes you want to do something with your hair before everything shifts. It felt like exactly the right micro-season to document. Not the big moment. The one just before it. The newness, before it becomes familiar.

It has been a while since we all got into a studio together. I want to be honest about that.

Lookbooks take a certain kind of energy, and for a long time we were building other things. The programmes, the frameworks, the education, the infrastructure that makes everything else possible. But there is a part of what EMK has always been that lives in the visual, in real people, real crowns, real styling documented without ceremony. We needed to come back to that.

So we did. ROOT™. BOUND™. BLOOMLINE™. A fresh cut. A few rubber bands. A full protective install. Nothing performed. Just hair as it actually is, worn by people who actually wear it, on an ordinary afternoon with flowers and bread and good music and light that happened to be exactly right.

The EMK Lookbook is not a campaign. It is a record. An ongoing, seasonal, honest record of textured hair in everyday life. Volume 001 exists because we wanted to start. Because the right micro-season arrived. Because some things are worth documenting before the heat comes and the moment is gone.

This is where we start.

With love from the studio,

日本には、四季ではなく72の季節があります。この繊細な時間の感覚に触発されて、EMK Lookbook Volume 001「Before the Heat」は生まれました。
