Coco: ROOT™ & BOUND™

The hair, the diagnostic, the decisions. A stylist's notes on working with Coco's crown for Volume 001.

Observation

When Coco arrived for her session, the first thing we noted was the contrast between her new growth and her ends. The base of her hair was healthy, coily, and full. The ends were a different story entirely. Previous bleaching had left them significantly damaged, with high porosity that made them soak up product fast and lose moisture just as quickly. Two different hair realities living on the same head.

She had also been cutting her own hair. Not by preference, but by necessity. Finding a salon in Japan that genuinely understands textured hair is still difficult, and Coco had been managing her own shape rather than risk a cut from someone unfamiliar with her texture. It is a situation more common than it should be, and it is exactly the gap EMK was built to address. The self-cutting had left the cut line uneven across the afro shape, which mattered for ROOT™, the look we were building first. To understand what we were working with, we started with the EMK Crown ID™ diagnostic.

✒️Stylist Note✒️

The low porosity base and high porosity ends meant we had to think about product application in two separate ways. The ends needed immediate, intensive moisture. The base needed product applied with heat or steam to open the cuticle enough to absorb it.

Reflection

The curl cut came first. Because Coco had been self-cutting, the shape had become uneven across the afro. To read the true cut line, we used a blowout to stretch the curl and see where the length actually sat. This is the only honest way to assess and correct the shape on highly shrinkage-prone hair. Cutting on dry, shrunken curls would have left us guessing.

For the blowout, Marc Anthony's GROW LONG acted as both heat protectant and detangler. Working through the sections with this product before applying heat gave us slip for the comb and a layer of protection between the tool and the strand.

Once the shape was corrected and the blowout was done, we moved into styling. OLAPLEX No.5 Leave-In went directly onto the damaged ends, targeting the porosity problem at the point where it was most acute. Then The Doux MOUSSE DEF across the whole head to support the clump pattern the hair naturally wants to form.

Questions

Working with a two-porosity head always raises the same question: how do you serve both at once without compromising either? Heavy moisture products that the ends need can sit on low-porosity roots without absorbing. Lightweight products that work for the base may not be enough for damaged ends. The answer here was layering by zone rather than applying one product uniformly, which is the practical application of what the Crown ID diagnostic is designed to reveal.

The BOUND™ styling

For the BOUND™ look, the goal was to clean up the front of the afro and frame the face without disturbing the shape of the crown. Eight rows along the hairline, two blocks per row, shallow rubber band rows. Baby hairs along the face to soften the transition. The pastel rubber bands were a deliberate choice, both for the Color Weather™ palette of early summer and for Coco's energy on the day.

The detail that made the difference was the cut line established in the curl cut. A rubber band row only looks intentional if the shape behind it is clean. That foundation work at the beginning of the session made the BOUND™ styling land the way it did.

Closing note

The part I keep coming back to is the blowout decision. It would have been faster to work on the curls in their natural state. But the shape would not have been honest, and the cut would not have been right. Taking the time to stretch the curl first is exactly the kind of choice that does not show up in the final photo but determines whether the final photo works.

スタイリングは損傷部にOLAPLEX No.5 Leave-in、全体にThe Doux MOUSSE DEFを使用しました。

BOUND™スタイリングでは、フェイスラインに8列×2ブロックの浅めラバーバンドローを施し、アフロのシェイプをキープしながらフロントをすっきりと整えました。仕上がりを決めたのは、最初のカットラインでした。
