Thailand Is Launching a New Immigration App Called THIM (and It Still Has Bugs)

Thailand's Immigration Bureau is rolling out THIM (Thailand Immigration Management), a new app designed to replace the current patchwork of paper forms, QR codes, and repeat data entry with a single digital profile. It is built on Amazon Web Services infrastructure hosted within Thailand and developed by Digital Identity Co in partnership with the Immigration Bureau.

The app is currently in pilot phase with hundreds of thousands of downloads already recorded. Sources differ on the exact full launch date, with some citing August 2026 and others October 2026 for the broader feature rollout. We will update this piece once the Bureau confirms.

What it actually does

If you travel to Thailand frequently, you already know the frustration of re-entering all 20 fields of the arrival card every single trip. THIM fixes that. You complete your full profile once, then only update select details like flight number and accommodation on future visits. First time setup takes about two to three minutes. Return visits reportedly take under one minute.

Once submitted, you will not need to show a QR code at immigration counters. Your data syncs directly with the Bureau's system, and officers confirm your digital form when they scan your physical passport.

The app currently supports English, Russian, Japanese and Chinese, with plans to expand to 15 more languages.

The bugs are real, so keep a backup plan

This is still a pilot and it shows. User reviews on the app store report real friction. Passport scanning is inconsistent depending on lighting and glare on the passport laminate. Some US passport holders have reported scan errors related to the photo page's official sticker. NFC verification occasionally fails with no retry option. If your passport produces a scan error, the app does have a manual data entry fallback, so you are not stuck.

Our advice: if you are traveling before the app stabilizes, complete your registration a few days early rather than at the airport, and keep the standard TDAC website as backup in case the app gives you trouble. Good lighting and a glare-free passport photo page makes a real difference in scan success.

The bigger plan

This is not just an arrival card tool. The Bureau envisions THIM becoming a comprehensive digital platform for all foreigners living in Thailand, including appointment booking, electronic visa extension services, online pre-submission of documents, and status change applications.

For long-term residents, this is the part worth watching. THIM is expected to eventually support the mandatory 90-day reporting requirement and official electronic document requests, which could significantly reduce trips to provincial immigration offices.

There are also plans to expand automated border channels, currently limited to Thai nationals, Singaporeans, and Hong Kong travel document holders, to more nationalities over time through facial recognition technology.

What to actually do right now

THIM is free to download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. The linked TDAC system carries no fee. As always, avoid any third party site charging money for something the government provides for free.

The TDAC arrival card itself remains mandatory regardless of which method you use to submit it. THIM is simply one way to file it, and the official TDAC website remains available if the app is not cooperating.
